Good to know
15% of 200 is 30. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase. Moving from 20% to 30% is a difference of 10 percentage points. Interpret percentage change from a negative base with care.
200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30
Understand and use your results
Calculate a share, a relative change or a percentage-point difference. The same two numbers mean different things in each mode, so distinguish percentages from percentage points.
How to use it
- Choose percentage of a value, change from a starting value, or difference between rates.
- Enter the starting and comparison values, then inspect the result and formula.
Worked example
change: 80 → 100
25%
The increase is 20. Dividing by the original 80 and multiplying by 100 gives 25%. A rate moving from 20% to 30% increases by 10 percentage points, or 50% relative to the original rate.
What happens with a zero or negative starting value?
Percentage change from zero is undefined and produces an error. A negative base uses the same arithmetic formula, but the sign can be misleading for changes such as a loss turning into a profit. Compare the absolute change and starting value as well.
