FIELD NOTES

Understand and use your results

Compare mean and median for scores, prices or durations. Looking at both helps reveal how a single extreme value affects the average.

How to use it

  1. Separate numbers with spaces, commas or line breaks.
  2. Inspect count, sum, minimum and maximum alongside mean and median.

Worked example

Input and options
1, 2, 100
Result or interpretation
mean: 34.333333333333336
median: 2
sum: 103

The mean divides the sum 103 by the count 3. The median is the middle sorted value, 2, making it less sensitive to the extreme 100. This is not a weighted average.

Does 1,000 mean one thousand?

A comma is a separator, so that input is read as 1 and 000. Enter 1000 for one thousand. Remove units and nonnumeric entries; the limit is 10,000 numbers.
